About Ranch Sorting
Ranch Sorting is a competitive event where teams of two riders on horseback work together against the clock. Success in this event relies heavily on teamwork, with both riders required to operate in harmony. The primary objective is to cut out the correct cattle from the herd and drive them into the pen, all while ensuring that incorrectly numbered cattle are kept back.
Event Structure
Typically, ranch sorting involves a team of two riders sorting a group of 10 cattle, each numbered from 0 to 9, along with one unnumbered cow, totalling 11 head of cattle. Producers may choose to add an additional unnumbered cow if desired. Each run begins with the team positioned on the opposite side of the start line from the cattle, setting the stage for a fast-paced and strategic competition.
